How large can I print it?

The file is around 9,000 px on the long edge. That prints crisply to about 75 cm on the long edge at gallery quality, and to 130–170 cm at the distance you look at a picture over furniture. Sizes, paper and framing, in detail →

Which paper or surface?

Gold on dark grounds wants a matte or satin fine-art paper (200–310 gsm), or aluminium for humid rooms; glossy photo paper turns the black into a mirror. The pale works also take satin and baryta papers.

Which licence do I need?

Personal (€9.99) covers your own home and gifts. Any business or space open to the public — a spa, clinic, hotel, office, restaurant — needs the commercial licence (€99.99, one venue, no renewal). The venue guide →

About this work

The upper half is left almost empty on purpose. That pale, misty sky gives the picture its calm, the same breathing space found in Japanese woodblock prints, and it makes the heron's upright shape stand out cleanly. The eye follows the long neck down from the black head plume to the pale grey and white body, then along the bill towards the left, where a patch of quiet water opens at the bottom of the sheet. Reeds and grasses in gold and straw tones rise around the bird in fine vertical strokes, adding rhythm and a soft shimmer. The palette is restrained: greys, creams, warm straw and gold, with the yellow-orange bill as the only strong accent. Seen from afar, it is a serene silhouette; up close, each reed and feather is finely drawn.

Patience is the grey heron's method. Ardea cinerea hunts by standing motionless in shallow water or among reeds, sometimes for many minutes, then striking with a fast jab of the bill at a passing fish or frog. That stillness is exactly the moment caught here. Grey herons nest together in colonies known as heronries, usually high in tall trees near water, and the same sites can be used for decades, with pairs building on the remains of old nests. In much of Britain the birds start nesting very early, often in February, long before most garden birds begin.

Soft neutrals suit it best: warm white, greige, pale stone or a misty blue-grey wall. A thin natural wood frame or a slim black one keeps the Japanese-print simplicity, and a generous white mat adds even more air. Gentle, diffused daylight brings out the gold in the reeds without glare. It sits well beside The Golden Kingfisher on a waterside wall, or with Pampas in Sage for a softer, neutral grouping. Printed from the 7168 × 10752 px file, it stays sharp to about 60 × 90 cm, and its tall shape works in narrow spaces too. You also receive a Frame TV version with a gallery mat.
