How large can I print it?

The file is around 9,000 px on the long edge. That prints crisply to about 75 cm on the long edge at gallery quality, and to 130–170 cm at the distance you look at a picture over furniture. Sizes, paper and framing, in detail →

Which paper or surface?

Gold on dark grounds wants a matte or satin fine-art paper (200–310 gsm), or aluminium for humid rooms; glossy photo paper turns the black into a mirror. The pale works also take satin and baryta papers.

Which licence do I need?

Personal (€9.99) covers your own home and gifts. Any business or space open to the public — a spa, clinic, hotel, office, restaurant — needs the commercial licence (€99.99, one venue, no renewal). The venue guide →

About this work

The sprig stands straight up the centre, so the picture has the upright, orderly feel of a specimen plate. Your eye starts at the violet flower spike, the only strong colour on the page, then moves down the stem through pairs of oval leaves that step outward on either side. Each leaf has a soft, pebbly texture, and the gold veins running through them add a fine, branching glint that is easy to miss from far off. The pale sage-mint background is barely darker than the leaves' lightest tones, which keeps the whole image gentle and low in contrast, with the flowers singing out at the top. Up close, the hooded shape of every blossom is visible; at a distance, the plant becomes a slim, elegant vertical.

Garden sage, Salvia officinalis, is a member of the mint family and grows wild around the Mediterranean, on dry, sunny slopes. Like its relatives it has square stems and two-lipped flowers, the upper lip forming the hood shown here. Many sages have a clever arrangement for pollination: when a bee pushes into the flower for nectar, it presses a small lever that swings the stamens down onto its back, dusting it with pollen. The genus name comes from the Latin salvere, to be well or unharmed. The soft grey-green of the leaves also gave English the colour name sage green.

Sage, mint and soft white walls make it feel like part of the room, and a lilac or heather accent picks up the flowers. A pale wood or simple white frame keeps it fresh; a slim antique-gold frame brings out the veins. Natural daylight in a kitchen or breakfast room suits it well. Pair it with Eucalyptus in Gold for a calm sage-green set, or hang it with The Goldfinch and Thistle for a little more colour. Printed from the 7168 × 10752 px file, it stays sharp to about 60 × 90 cm, while small sizes look charming in a herb-garden group. The purchase includes a Frame TV version with a gallery mat.
