The Goldfinch and Thistle

Vintage Bird Print in Gold

Clinging to a tall thistle stem, a little European goldfinch shows off its red face, black-and-white head and yellow wing bars, as if caught for a moment between one seed head and the next.

How large can I print it?

The file is around 9,000 px on the long edge. That prints crisply to about 75 cm on the long edge at gallery quality, and to 130–170 cm at the distance you look at a picture over furniture. Sizes, paper and framing, in detail →

Which paper or surface?

Gold on dark grounds wants a matte or satin fine-art paper (200–310 gsm), or aluminium for humid rooms; glossy photo paper turns the black into a mirror. The pale works also take satin and baryta papers.

Which licence do I need?

Personal (€9.99) covers your own home and gifts. Any business or space open to the public — a spa, clinic, hotel, office, restaurant — needs the commercial licence (€99.99, one venue, no renewal). The venue guide →

About this work

The thistle stem rises like a spine through the sheet, with the bird clinging to it, so the picture is read from bottom to top and back again. Spiny grey-green leaves anchor the base; the flower heads lead upward, two with purple tufts and one turned to gold. That gold head is the quiet surprise, a single gilded note among natural colours. The goldfinch itself is a small study in contrasts: crimson face, crisp black and white on the head, warm buff body, black wings striped with yellow. The cream parchment ground and the faded, hand-coloured look give it the softness of a page from an old natural history book. From the doorway it reads as a bright, cheerful specimen plate; close up, each spine and feather has been drawn.

The goldfinch and the thistle belong together, and the bird's name says so. Its Latin genus, Carduelis, comes from carduus, the Latin for thistle, because the finch's fine, pointed bill can pull the seeds out of a ripe thistle head where larger birds cannot reach. Goldfinches have also had a long life in art. In 1654 the Dutch painter Carel Fabritius painted The Goldfinch, a small panel showing a pet finch chained to its perch on a wall, now in the Mauritshuis in The Hague. Fabritius died the same year in the gunpowder explosion that devastated Delft.

Warm creams, butter yellows and pale greens bring out the parchment, while a dusky pink or lilac wall echoes the thistle tufts. A light oak or simple gilt frame suits the antique feel, and a cream mat makes it look like a treasured plate from a bound volume. It is gentle enough for a nursery or a guest room, too. Combine it with Swallows in Blossom for a pair of spring birds, or with The Garden Sage for a mixed botanical wall. Printed from the 7168 × 10752 px file, it stays sharp to about 60 × 90 cm, though it also charms at small sizes. A Frame TV version with a gallery mat comes in the download.
