Swallows in Blossom

Swallows in Blossom — Samsung Frame TV art, 3840 × 2160
How large can I print it?

The file is around 9,000 px on the long edge. That prints crisply to about 75 cm on the long edge at gallery quality, and to 130–170 cm at the distance you look at a picture over furniture. Sizes, paper and framing, in detail →

Which paper or surface?

Gold on dark grounds wants a matte or satin fine-art paper (200–310 gsm), or aluminium for humid rooms; glossy photo paper turns the black into a mirror. The pale works also take satin and baryta papers.

Which licence do I need?

Personal (€9.99) covers your own home and gifts. Any business or space open to the public — a spa, clinic, hotel, office, restaurant — needs the commercial licence (€99.99, one venue, no renewal). The venue guide →

About this work

Where the other birds in this collection sit still, these three are all movement. Their bodies point in different directions, so the eye keeps travelling between them, from one forked tail to the next rust-red face, never quite settling. Blossom fills both sides and the corners, framing an open patch of pale blue sky in the middle where the birds have room to fly. The contrast is lively: dark, glossy navy against soft pink and white petals, with cream bellies bridging the two. Thin gold lines along the wing edges add a touch of warmth to the dark wings, like a flicker of sun on feathers. From across the room the picture reads as a joyful spring pattern; closer in, you notice the separate petals, the fine tail streamers and the sheen on each back.

Swallows and blossom are both signs of spring in Europe, and the timing is real: barn swallows, Hirundo rustica, return from their winter quarters in Africa around the time fruit trees flower. Swallows from Britain spend the winter as far south as South Africa, a journey of about 10,000 kilometres each way, and many come back to the same barn or shed year after year. The proverb about not jumping to conclusions goes back to Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics. In his Greek, though, one swallow does not make a spring; English later turned it into a summer.

Pale blue, blush pink and soft white walls let the blossom glow, and the navy birds give a light room just enough contrast. Choose a white or pale wood frame for a fresh look, or thin gold to echo the wing lines, with a white mat for extra lightness. Bright natural light suits it perfectly. Pair it with The Goldfinch and Thistle for a cheerful bird duo, or with Morning in Gold for a soft, airy spring wall. Printed from the 7168 × 10752 px file, it stays sharp to about 60 × 90 cm, plenty for a large wall above a dining table. A matching Frame TV version with a gallery mat is included.
