How large can I print it?

The file is around 9,000 px on the long edge. That prints crisply to about 75 cm on the long edge at gallery quality, and to 130–170 cm at the distance you look at a picture over furniture. Sizes, paper and framing, in detail →

Which paper or surface?

Gold on dark grounds wants a matte or satin fine-art paper (200–310 gsm), or aluminium for humid rooms; glossy photo paper turns the black into a mirror. The pale works also take satin and baryta papers.

Which licence do I need?

Personal (€9.99) covers your own home and gifts. Any business or space open to the public — a spa, clinic, hotel, office, restaurant — needs the commercial licence (€99.99, one venue, no renewal). The venue guide →

About this work

The eye goes straight to the bird, and then the long bill sends it on to the right, into the empty teal space ahead. Below, the reflection repeats the shape in darker, softer tones, so the composition reads almost as a pair: the kingfisher above, its echo in the water beneath. Colour does most of the work. The turquoise back and the warm orange chest sit on opposite sides of the colour wheel, and against the plain, deep background both seem to glow. A white throat adds a small bright note beside the face patch. Up close, gold flecks scattered over the wing and back catch the light, much like the sheen on a real kingfisher. From across a room the picture simplifies into a bright jewel of colour on dark water, calm and very still.

The word halcyon, from the Greek name for the kingfisher, carries an old story. A legend tells that Alcyone, grieving for her husband Ceyx, who had drowned at sea, was turned into a kingfisher, and that her father Aeolus, keeper of the winds, calmed the waves for several days each winter so that she could nest on the water. Those still midwinter days became the halcyon days, and the phrase later came to mean any peaceful, happy time remembered with fondness. The real common kingfisher, Alcedo atthis, nests in tunnels dug into riverbanks rather than on the open sea, but the flat, mirror-like water in this picture fits the legend well.

Teal and turquoise make this an easy match for bathrooms and blue or green bedrooms, and it works on a crisp white wall too, where the dark ground stands out. A thin black or brass frame keeps the bird the centre of attention, while a wide off-white mat gives the dark field room to breathe. Hang it where daylight falls across it so the gold flecks come alive. It pairs well with The Grey Heron for a waterside theme, or with Ginkgo in Sage and Gold for a lighter, calmer contrast. Printed from the 7168 × 10752 px file, it stays sharp to about 60 × 90 cm, large enough for a statement over a sideboard. A Frame TV version with a gallery mat is included as well.
