Eucalyptus in Gold

Sage Green Wall Art

How large can I print it?

The file is around 9,000 px on the long edge. That prints crisply to about 75 cm on the long edge at gallery quality, and to 130–170 cm at the distance you look at a picture over furniture. Sizes, paper and framing, in detail →

Which paper or surface?

Gold on dark grounds wants a matte or satin fine-art paper (200–310 gsm), or aluminium for humid rooms; glossy photo paper turns the black into a mirror. The pale works also take satin and baryta papers.

Which licence do I need?

Personal (€9.99) covers your own home and gifts. Any business or space open to the public — a spa, clinic, hotel, office, restaurant — needs the commercial licence (€99.99, one venue, no renewal). The venue guide →

About this work

Restraint is the point of this picture. One stem, a handful of rounded leaves and a great deal of open cream space: that is all, and it is enough. The branch starts at the bottom centre and climbs gently, so the eye moves upward with it, from leaf to leaf through sage and deeper green. Watercolour gives each leaf soft edges and slight pools of pigment, so no two greens are quite the same. The two gold leaves on the left break the rhythm just once, catching light and adding warmth to the cool palette. Close up you can see the paper-like grain of the washes; from a distance it becomes a calm, airy shape that lets a wall breathe rather than filling it.

Eucalyptus is an Australian plant through and through. Nearly all of the 700 or more species in the genus are native to Australia, where they range from shrubs to some of the tallest flowering trees on earth. Many species change their foliage as they grow. Young shoots carry round, often bluish or silvery leaves that clasp the stem in pairs, while the adult leaves are usually long, narrow and sickle-shaped, hanging down to avoid the full midday sun. Florists favour the rounded juvenile kind, sold as silver dollar eucalyptus, which is the leaf shape painted here.

Linen whites, oatmeal and pale sage walls make it look at home, and it adds quiet colour to a grey or concrete-toned space. A thin light oak frame suits the natural mood; a slim brushed-gold one picks up the gilded leaves. Plenty of daylight, or soft bathroom lighting, flatters the watercolour. Group it with Ginkgo in Sage and Gold for a minimal botanical pair, or contrast it with The Grey Heron for a calm mixed wall. Printed from the 7168 × 10752 px file, it stays sharp to about 60 × 90 cm, yet thanks to its open space it works small too. The file set includes a Frame TV version with a gallery mat.
