ART DECO WALL ART IN GOLD

The Golden Sunburst

Art Deco Poster in Gold

Polished bronze-gold fills the black sheet in one symmetrical ornament: stepped arches nest like a doorway around fluted columns, fans of rays spread up and out behind, and the whole form narrows to a sharp point below.

How large can I print it?

The file is around 9,000 px on the long edge. That prints crisply to about 75 cm on the long edge at gallery quality, and to 130–170 cm at the distance you look at a picture over furniture. Sizes, paper and framing, in detail →

Which paper or surface?

Gold on dark grounds wants a matte or satin fine-art paper (200–310 gsm), or aluminium for humid rooms; glossy photo paper turns the black into a mirror. The pale works also take satin and baryta papers.

Which licence do I need?

Personal (€9.99) covers your own home and gifts. Any business or space open to the public — a spa, clinic, hotel, office, restaurant — needs the commercial licence (€99.99, one venue, no renewal). The venue guide →

About this work

Look at it from a distance first and it reads as an emblem, almost a badge, standing perfectly balanced on its sharp lower point. Then the depth starts to show. The nested, stepped arches recede like a series of doorframes, each one smaller than the last, drawing the eye inwards to the fluted columns at the centre. Behind them the rays open in wide fan-shaped bundles, upward and outward, so the ornament seems to expand even while it stays still. The metal looks three-dimensional and reflective, with bright highlights on the ridges and darker bronze in the grooves, and against pure black every edge is crisp. Up close you notice how the fluting and the ray bundles catch the light differently; from across the room the whole thing gleams like a polished fitting in a grand 1920s lobby.

Art Deco takes its name from the Exposition internationale des Arts décoratifs et industriels modernes, held in Paris in 1925, where designers showed furniture, glass, metalwork and complete interiors in a confident modern style. The short label came much later: it only became common in the 1960s, helped by the historian Bevis Hillier's 1968 book Art Deco of the 20s and 30s. Among the style's favourite motifs was the sunburst, rays fanning out from a central point, which appeared on radios, mirrors, lift doors, cinema façades and the garden gates of suburban houses. Stepped forms, echoing the setbacks of new skyscrapers, were just as popular. This design brings both ideas together in a single gleaming ornament.

Black, emerald, deep teal and navy walls show the metal at its richest, while a pale wall turns it into a sharp, graphic statement. A slim black frame keeps the look modern; polished brass leans into the period glamour. Skip the mat for bold, edge-to-edge black. Pair it with Golden Skyline for a Gatsby-style wall of black and gold, or with The Rearing Horse, which glows in the same bronze and gold against black. Wall sconces or a warm picture light will make the highlights flicker. Printed from the 7168 × 10752 px file, it stays sharp to about 60 × 90 cm, a confident size above a sideboard. Included as well: a Frame TV version with a gallery mat.
