How large can I print it?

The file is around 9,000 px on the long edge. That prints crisply to about 75 cm on the long edge at gallery quality, and to 130–170 cm at the distance you look at a picture over furniture. Sizes, paper and framing, in detail →

Which paper or surface?

Gold on dark grounds wants a matte or satin fine-art paper (200–310 gsm), or aluminium for humid rooms; glossy photo paper turns the black into a mirror. The pale works also take satin and baryta papers.

Which licence do I need?

Personal (€9.99) covers your own home and gifts. Any business or space open to the public — a spa, clinic, hotel, office, restaurant — needs the commercial licence (€99.99, one venue, no renewal). The venue guide →

About this work

Everything in the composition points upward. The central tower narrows in steps towards its slender spire, and the searchlight beams behind it repeat that climb in broad gold bands, opening across the black sky like the ribs of a fan. Below, the smaller towers crowd together, their amber windows scattered like embers, so the base of the picture feels busy and warm while the top stays open and dark. The palette is limited to black, gold and amber, which gives the scene the glow of a night-time Art Deco poster, the city lit from within and from behind at once. From across a room the beams and the spire form one bold upward shape; closer in, the windows and setbacks invite you to explore an imagined skyline rather than any real city.

Stepped towers like this owe a great deal to a planning rule. In 1916 New York City adopted its first comprehensive zoning resolution, which required tall buildings to step back from the street as they rose so that light and air could still reach the pavement below. Architects responded with setbacks, tiered masses often compared to ziggurats or wedding cakes, and the profile became a signature of the 1920s skyline. The architectural illustrator Hugh Ferriss dramatised these shapes in charcoal drawings of towers looming in the dark, collected in his book The Metropolis of Tomorrow (1929). Searchlights sweeping the night sky were a familiar sight of the era too, at film premieres and grand openings. This picture imagines such a city rather than portraying a real one.

It suits a study, a home office or a living room with a city-loft feel, and its upward lines also work well in a hallway. Black, navy, charcoal and warm grey walls deepen the night sky; on white it becomes a striking, cinematic panel. A slim black or brushed-brass frame keeps the lines clean, with no mat or only a thin black one. Pair it with The Golden Fountain for two Art Deco scenes in gold, or with Golden Café Terrace at Night, a lamplit street after Van Gogh. Printed from the 7168 × 10752 px file, it stays sharp to about 60 × 90 cm, a good height between two windows or above a desk. A Frame TV version with a gallery mat is included for screens.
