How large can I print it?

The file is around 9,000 px on the long edge. That prints crisply to about 75 cm on the long edge at gallery quality, and to 130–170 cm at the distance you look at a picture over furniture. Sizes, paper and framing, in detail →

Which paper or surface?

Gold on dark grounds wants a matte or satin fine-art paper (200–310 gsm), or aluminium for humid rooms; glossy photo paper turns the black into a mirror. The pale works also take satin and baryta papers.

Which licence do I need?

Personal (€9.99) covers your own home and gifts. Any business or space open to the public — a spa, clinic, hotel, office, restaurant — needs the commercial licence (€99.99, one venue, no renewal). The venue guide →

About this work

Two versions of the tail work together here, and that is the clever part. Behind the bird, the fan is drawn only in fine gold lines, a half circle of eye feathers with teal centres that reads almost like an ornamental screen. In front, the long train falls in a heavier sweep to the bottom right, giving the composition its downward movement. Between them the body, in dark emerald and teal with a scale pattern, holds the densest, richest colour in the picture. Vertical gold lines and four circular teal medallions in the corners frame everything like the border of a 1920s poster. The black ground lets the jewel tones glow without competition. Up close you can trace each gold line of the feathers; from across a room the fan becomes a shimmering arc behind a dark, elegant silhouette.

Peacocks were a favourite of decorative artists long before the 1920s. In 1876 and 1877 the painter James McNeill Whistler covered a London dining room with gold peacocks on a deep blue-green ground, a scheme he called Harmony in Blue and Gold: The Peacock Room. It became a landmark of the Aesthetic movement and was later moved to the Freer Gallery of Art in Washington, where it can still be seen. Art Deco designers kept the bird but sharpened it into fans, arcs and geometric scales. The natural detail is worth knowing too: the peacock's great display is not its tail but a train of long covert feathers growing above it, each tipped with an eye spot called an ocellus.

Jewel-toned rooms suit it best: peacock teal, emerald, bottle green or navy walls deepen the colours, while black makes the gold lines sparkle. In a dark-tiled bathroom or a dining room with velvet chairs it feels quietly opulent. A slim gold frame echoes the vertical lines; wide coloured mats would fight the medallions. Hang it with Panther in the Golden Palms for a lush Art Deco pairing, or with Poseidon in Gold, whose dark teal sea answers the peacock's palette. Keep it clear of shower steam. Printed from the 7168 × 10752 px file, it stays sharp to about 60 × 90 cm, ideal above a sofa or a bath. A Frame TV version with a gallery mat is part of the download.
