Poseidon in Gold — Samsung Frame TV art, 3840 × 2160
How large can I print it?

The file is around 9,000 px on the long edge. That prints crisply to about 75 cm on the long edge at gallery quality, and to 130–170 cm at the distance you look at a picture over furniture. Sizes, paper and framing, in detail →

Which paper or surface?

Gold on dark grounds wants a matte or satin fine-art paper (200–310 gsm), or aluminium for humid rooms; glossy photo paper turns the black into a mirror. The pale works also take satin and baryta papers.

Which licence do I need?

Personal (€9.99) covers your own home and gifts. Any business or space open to the public — a spa, clinic, hotel, office, restaurant — needs the commercial licence (€99.99, one venue, no renewal). The venue guide →

About this work

The trident catches the eye first, a tall shaft of gold standing upright at the right and giving the composition a firm vertical line. Beside it the sea god fills the picture: a crown on his head, hair and beard falling in long heavy curls, the muscular torso carved in white marble. Gold leaf ornaments on his shoulders and crown pick up the shine of the trident, so the gold forms a loose triangle across the figure. At the bottom the waves foam up in dark teal and white, and the statue seems to surge out of the water rather than stand on a plinth. The same dark teal fills the background, cool and deep. Up close the curls of the beard and the foam have a sculpted richness; from across the room it reads as a powerful pale figure in a dark sea.

Poseidon ruled the sea in Greek myth, but his realm was wider than water. He was also the god of earthquakes, called the Earth-shaker by Homer, and the god of horses; a legend tells that he created the first horse. His trident, a three-pronged spear like those once used for fishing, could stir up storms or calm the waves. Statues of the gods looked very different in antiquity from the white marble we know today: they were originally painted, and traces of pigment found on ancient sculptures point to coloured skin, patterned garments and painted eyes. Most of that colour has been lost over the centuries. The gold on our Poseidon is therefore our own addition, not an ancient finish.

Pegasus in Gold makes a natural companion, since in some versions of the myth Poseidon was the winged horse's father. For a water theme, The Golden Fountain adds Art Deco cascades in cream and bronze. Teal, petrol blue, navy and slate walls deepen the sea; on white walls the dark teal background looks like a window onto the deep. A brushed gold or dark bronze frame suits the trident, and a wide off-white mat gives a museum feel. In a bathroom, keep it away from splashes and use a well-sealed frame with glazing. At about 60 × 90 cm the 7168 × 10752 px file still prints sharp. A Frame TV version with a gallery mat is included in the download.
