How large can I print it?

The file is around 9,000 px on the long edge. That prints crisply to about 75 cm on the long edge at gallery quality, and to 130–170 cm at the distance you look at a picture over furniture. Sizes, paper and framing, in detail →

Which paper or surface?

Gold on dark grounds wants a matte or satin fine-art paper (200–310 gsm), or aluminium for humid rooms; glossy photo paper turns the black into a mirror. The pale works also take satin and baryta papers.

Which licence do I need?

Personal (€9.99) covers your own home and gifts. Any business or space open to the public — a spa, clinic, hotel, office, restaurant — needs the commercial licence (€99.99, one venue, no renewal). The venue guide →

About this work

The whole figure is one rising diagonal. It starts at the hind legs planted low in the picture, climbs through the powerful back and chest and ends in the raised forelegs and head at upper left, so the eye is pulled upwards with the movement itself. Mane and tail stream out in long curves, softening that strong line and adding a sense of wind and speed. The light comes from behind, which is why the body seems to glow: its edges burn bright bronze and gold, while the black background around it stays absolute. Floating gold particles drift through that darkness like sparks, filling the empty space without crowding it. Close up you notice how the glow shifts from deep bronze to pale gold across the body; from further away the horse becomes a single blazing silhouette, theatrical and proud.

A horse rearing in the open is usually reacting, whether in alarm, in play or in a contest between stallions, and it can be dangerous for anyone nearby. Classical dressage turned that natural movement into something controlled. In the levade, one of the so-called airs above the ground, the horse lowers its hindquarters deeply, bends its hocks and lifts its forehand, holding the pose still for a moment in perfect balance. It demands great strength and years of training. Painters and sculptors loved the image, and from the 17th century onwards many portraits of rulers on horseback showed the mount in a levade-like pose, a sign of mastery over a powerful animal. The Rearing Horse keeps all of that energy but leaves out the rider.

Hang it with The Arabian in Gold for two very different horses, one glowing, one drawn in fine line, or with Poseidon in Gold, a fitting partner since the sea god was also lord of horses in Greek myth. Charcoal, black, oxblood and deep navy walls let the dark ground disappear and the figure blaze; on lighter walls a wide black mat keeps the drama. A slim black or brushed bronze frame suits it well, and a single warm picture light from above echoes the backlighting. Printed from the 7168 × 10752 px file, it stays sharp to about 60 × 90 cm, a scale that suits a large wall. A Frame TV version with a gallery mat is included as well.
