The Hand That Holds the Moon — Samsung Frame TV art, 3840 × 2160
How large can I print it?

The file is around 9,000 px on the long edge. That prints crisply to about 75 cm on the long edge at gallery quality, and to 130–170 cm at the distance you look at a picture over furniture. Sizes, paper and framing, in detail →

Which paper or surface?

Gold on dark grounds wants a matte or satin fine-art paper (200–310 gsm), or aluminium for humid rooms; glossy photo paper turns the black into a mirror. The pale works also take satin and baryta papers.

Which licence do I need?

Personal (€9.99) covers your own home and gifts. Any business or space open to the public — a spa, clinic, hotel, office, restaurant — needs the commercial licence (€99.99, one venue, no renewal). The venue guide →

About this work

The composition is built on a single upward line. It begins at the sleeve, climbs through the palm and the spread fingers and ends at the crescent, so the gesture of reaching is the first thing you feel. Six small moon discs, three on each side, curve around the hand in an oval, framing it like a ring of lanterns, and between them float small four-pointed stars and a haze of gold dust. Everything is drawn in fine engraved gold lines on black, which keeps the picture light despite the dark ground. The crescent's halo of thin rays gives the top a soft burst of brightness, a natural end point for the eye. Close up, the hatching on the fingers and sleeve looks hand-cut; from further back the hand becomes a gentle, mystical silhouette, more boho than solemn.

Astronomers have long used the hand as a rough measuring tool. Held out at arm's length, a clenched fist covers about ten degrees of sky and the tip of the little finger about one degree, while the moon, however large it may look, spans only about half a degree. In other words, a fingertip held at arm's length is enough to hide the full moon completely. That small size surprises people, especially when the moon sits low on the horizon and appears huge, an effect known as the moon illusion: its size in the sky has not changed, only our perception of it. The hand here reaches for the crescent rather than measuring it, yet the gesture plays on the same gap between near and far.

Black walls are rare, but this print makes a good case for them; charcoal, deep plum, terracotta or warm cream also set off the gold line art beautifully. A thin gold frame repeats the engraved lines, and a black mat keeps the mood intimate, while a white mat makes it crisper and more graphic. Hang it near Phases of the Golden Moon to build a lunar corner, or opposite Medusa in Gold for black and gold with a mythic edge. Soft lamplight suits it best. Printed from the 7168 × 10752 px file, it stays sharp to about 60 × 90 cm, though it is just as striking smaller above a bedside table. A Frame TV version with a gallery mat is included in the download.
