The Golden Crescent — Samsung Frame TV art, 3840 × 2160
How large can I print it?

The file is around 9,000 px on the long edge. That prints crisply to about 75 cm on the long edge at gallery quality, and to 130–170 cm at the distance you look at a picture over furniture. Sizes, paper and framing, in detail →

Which paper or surface?

Gold on dark grounds wants a matte or satin fine-art paper (200–310 gsm), or aluminium for humid rooms; glossy photo paper turns the black into a mirror. The pale works also take satin and baryta papers.

Which licence do I need?

Personal (€9.99) covers your own home and gifts. Any business or space open to the public — a spa, clinic, hotel, office, restaurant — needs the commercial licence (€99.99, one venue, no renewal). The venue guide →

About this work

The picture is split almost in two, and that division is what makes it so restful. Above, the sky is dark and open, with the crescent set as a clean, unbroken arc of gold: no face, no ornament, just the curve itself. Small stars and several four-pointed sparkles are scattered around it, thick enough to suggest a clear night but never crowded. Below, the clouds billow upwards in cream and slate blue, built from fine engraved lines that curl and loop like the waves of an old etching. The eye starts at the moon, drifts down through the stars and comes to rest in the soft mass of cloud. Up close the curling linework is wonderfully intricate; from across the room it softens into a pale, cushioned band beneath the bright gold arc.

The word crescent comes from the Latin crescens, growing, and it first belonged to the waxing moon, the thin sliver that fattens night by night after the new moon. One rule never changes: the bright curve of a crescent always faces the sun, so its horns point away from it. That is why a young crescent seen in the west after sunset has its lit edge turned down towards the vanished sun. The angle at which it sits depends on latitude and season, and closer to the equator a crescent can lie almost on its back like a little boat. Here the horns point up and to the right, so the sun, if it were shown, would lie down to the left, hidden somewhere beneath the clouds.

Its calm makes it a natural choice for a bedroom or a nursery, and it also gives a busy hallway a moment of stillness. Pale blue, grey-blue or warm cream walls pick up the clouds; charcoal lets the moon shine brighter. A thin brass or champagne frame with an off-white mat keeps it light. Pair it with The Hand That Holds the Moon, where a second crescent glows on black, or contrast it with Golden Café Terrace at Night and its starry sky over a lamplit street. Keep it out of strong direct sun. Printed from the 7168 × 10752 px file, it stays sharp to about 60 × 90 cm, large enough above a bed. A Frame TV version with a gallery mat is included as well.
