Golden Venus

Botticelli Reimagined in Gold

Eyes closed and face tilted up to the left, Venus seems to breathe in the sea air, while long golden-copper hair swirls around her and gold leaf foams across the top.

Its warmth suits a bedroom, a bathroom or a dressing room, and it looks lovely above a bed, a vanity or a chest of drawers against blush, cream or terracotta walls.

How large can I print it?

The file is around 9,000 px on the long edge. That prints crisply to about 75 cm on the long edge at gallery quality, and to 130–170 cm at the distance you look at a picture over furniture. Sizes, paper and framing, in detail →

Which paper or surface?

Gold on dark grounds wants a matte or satin fine-art paper (200–310 gsm), or aluminium for humid rooms; glossy photo paper turns the black into a mirror. The pale works also take satin and baryta papers.

Which licence do I need?

Personal (€9.99) covers your own home and gifts. Any business or space open to the public — a spa, clinic, hotel, office, restaurant — needs the commercial licence (€99.99, one venue, no renewal). The venue guide →

About this work

Hair is the true subject here. Long, wavy golden-copper strands blow around the face and spread across most of the picture, so the eye keeps moving along their curves, from the crown out to the edges and back again. At the heart of all that movement the face is still: tilted up to the left, eyes closed, lips parted, with a scatter of freckles. A bare shoulder appears at the bottom right, just enough to anchor the head and hint at the full figure of the original, while the close crop keeps the image intimate and calm. At the top, swirling gold leaf suggests sea foam, a nod to the goddess rising from the waves. Up close you can trace single locks and the gold catching the light; from a distance the whole picture glows like warm metal.

Botticelli's The Birth of Venus, painted around 1484–86 and now in the Uffizi in Florence, shows the goddess arriving at the shore on a scallop shell, blown in by the winds while a female figure waits with a cloak. It is painted on canvas, an unusual choice in Florence at the time, when important pictures were normally painted on wooden panels. In Hesiod's Theogony, Aphrodite, the Roman Venus, is born from the foam of the sea, and ancient writers linked her Greek name with aphros, the word for foam. Golden Venus is a reimagining after Botticelli rather than a copy: it crops the scene to head and shoulders, turns the face upwards with closed eyes and lets gold leaf stand in for that legendary foam.

Pair it with Golden Woman with a Parasol for two women caught in the wind, one under a sunlit blue sky, one in copper and gold, or with Persephone in Gold for a second goddess from myth. Blush pink, cream, terracotta and soft olive walls bring out the copper tones, while cooler greys make the gold look brighter. A gilded or warm bronze frame suits the glow, and an ivory mat of five to seven centimetres gives the hair room to flow. Soft daylight and warm evening lamps both flatter it. Printed from the 7168 × 10752 px file, it stays sharp to about 60 × 90 cm, a generous size above a bed. A Frame TV version with a gallery mat comes included.
