How large can I print it?

The file is around 9,000 px on the long edge. That prints crisply to about 75 cm on the long edge at gallery quality, and to 130–170 cm at the distance you look at a picture over furniture. Sizes, paper and framing, in detail →

Which paper or surface?

Gold on dark grounds wants a matte or satin fine-art paper (200–310 gsm), or aluminium for humid rooms; glossy photo paper turns the black into a mirror. The pale works also take satin and baryta papers.

Which licence do I need?

Personal (€9.99) covers your own home and gifts. Any business or space open to the public — a spa, clinic, hotel, office, restaurant — needs the commercial licence (€99.99, one venue, no renewal). The venue guide →

About this work

The turn of the head is everything. Her shoulder points away while her face comes round towards us, blue eyes and pink lips catching the light, and that half-turn makes the moment feel caught rather than posed. From the face the eye drops to the pearl, a single large drop at her ear, then climbs into the turban. Here the reimagining is easiest to see: the blue fabric has a woven, mosaic-like texture set with patches of gold leaf, and the long gold-yellow cloth falls down her back in a warm stripe. Flakes of gold leaf scatter across the blue robe. Against the black background every colour gains intensity. Be aware that the finish is very smooth, almost photographic, rather than visibly brushed, so up close you see soft skin tones and crisp gold edges, not paint texture. From across the room, blue, gold and pearl read at once.

Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring, painted around 1665 and now in the Mauritshuis in The Hague, is not a portrait in the usual sense. It is a tronie, the Dutch term for a study of a face, an expression or a character type, rather than a likeness of a named sitter, and nobody knows who posed for it. For the turban Vermeer painted the blue with natural ultramarine, a pigment ground from lapis lazuli and one of the most expensive colours a painter could buy. This version is made after the painting rather than copied from it: it keeps the glance, the turban and the pearl, answers that precious blue with patches of gold leaf, and swaps the painted surface for a smooth, polished finish.

Hung with Golden Venus, it creates a pair of famous faces made new in gold, one cool and blue, one warm and copper. For a bolder mix, The Golden Flapper adds another woman in pearls and a headpiece, two and a half centuries later. Navy, teal, ochre and warm charcoal walls suit the ultramarine and gold, while pure white can make the black ground look stark. A dark wood or antique gold frame gives it a gallery feel, with a narrow cream mat for a classic look. Soft, angled light flatters the smooth finish. Printed from the 7168 × 10752 px file, it stays sharp to about 60 × 90 cm, plenty for a landing or a living room. You also get a Frame TV version with a gallery mat.
