Wild Horses at Sunset

Horse Art Print in Gold

A whole herd is coming your way: about ten horses gallop through glowing dust, led at lower left by a dark brown and white piebald, their manes lit gold by the low sun.

It brings warmth and energy to a family room, a country kitchen or a hallway, especially against terracotta, ochre, cream or warm olive walls above a long sideboard.

Wild Horses at Sunset — Samsung Frame TV art, 3840 × 2160
How large can I print it?

The file is around 9,000 px on the long edge. That prints crisply to about 75 cm on the long edge at gallery quality, and to 130–170 cm at the distance you look at a picture over furniture. Sizes, paper and framing, in detail →

Which paper or surface?

Gold on dark grounds wants a matte or satin fine-art paper (200–310 gsm), or aluminium for humid rooms; glossy photo paper turns the black into a mirror. The pale works also take satin and baryta papers.

Which licence do I need?

Personal (€9.99) covers your own home and gifts. Any business or space open to the public — a spa, clinic, hotel, office, restaurant — needs the commercial licence (€99.99, one venue, no renewal). The venue guide →

About this work

The composition is built in depth. In the lower left foreground the piebald, its dark brown and white patches crisp and clear, anchors the picture and sets the direction of travel, straight at the viewer. Behind it the rest of the herd crowds forward, each horse a little softer and more veiled in dust, so the eye counts its way back through layers of bodies and heads. The sun sits behind them, and its warm orange-gold light outlines manes and backs with bright edges. At the bottom, splashes of gold leaf fly up like spray or dust kicked from the ground, linking the surface of the painting to its subject. Up close the brushwork is loose and energetic, every stroke still visible; from across a room it reads as one surging wave of warm colour.

Herds like this raise a question about the word wild. Most free-roaming horses today, including the mustangs of the American West and the brumbies of Australia, are feral: they descend from domestic horses that escaped or were turned loose, some of them centuries ago. Przewalski's horse, a stocky dun animal from the steppes of Central Asia, is usually described as the last truly wild horse, never domesticated, though recent genetic research has made even that claim more complicated. It vanished from the wild in the second half of the 20th century and survived only in zoos, until reintroduction projects in Mongolia from the 1990s brought herds back to its native grassland. With its piebald leader, the painted herd looks much more like the free-roaming kind.

Pair it with The Little Foal for a contrast of tempo, the thundering herd beside a quiet family scene, or with Golden Impression, Sunrise, whose orange sun glows in the same warm key. Walls in terracotta, rust, sand, ochre or warm white all carry the sunset palette, and dark wood furniture underlines the brown tones. A natural oak or antique gold frame suits it best; skip the mat for a bolder look or use a narrow cream one. It glows most in late afternoon light. Printed from the 7168 × 10752 px file, it stays sharp to about 60 × 90 cm, a size that lets the herd fill a wall above a sofa. A Frame TV version with a gallery mat is part of the set.
