On the left a tall dark cypress flickers upward like a green flame, while swirling clouds turn overhead and a golden wheat field spreads across the whole lower half.

How large can I print it?
The file is around 9,000 px on the long edge. That prints crisply to about 75 cm on the long edge at gallery quality, and to 130–170 cm at the distance you look at a picture over furniture. Sizes, paper and framing, in detail →
Which paper or surface?
Gold on dark grounds wants a matte or satin fine-art paper (200–310 gsm), or aluminium for humid rooms; glossy photo paper turns the black into a mirror. The pale works also take satin and baryta papers.
Which licence do I need?
Personal (€9.99) covers your own home and gifts. Any business or space open to the public — a spa, clinic, hotel, office, restaurant — needs the commercial licence (€99.99, one venue, no renewal). The venue guide →
Nothing in this landscape keeps still. The cypress on the left is the tallest and darkest shape, and its twisting outline sends the eye straight up into a sky of blue-grey and cream clouds that curl like smoke. At the top, large patches of gold leaf break through the clouds and give the upper edge a metallic shine. Lower down the movement slows: green trees and low hills form a calmer band in the middle distance, and beneath them the wheat fills half the picture with warm yellow and gold. The paint is thick and swirling throughout, every stroke seeming to follow the wind. Close up you can trace the ridges of impasto and the edges of each gold patch; from across the room the dark tree and the bright field become a bold contrast of shade and sunlight.
Van Gogh painted Wheat Field with Cypresses in 1889 while staying at the asylum of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. He made the first version outdoors in early summer and later painted further versions in the studio, so three are known today: one in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, one in the National Gallery in London and a smaller one in a private collection. In a letter to his brother Theo he wrote that the cypresses kept occupying his thoughts, comparing one to an Egyptian obelisk for its lines and proportions. Ours is a reimagining, not a copy: it turns the wide composition into an upright portrait, adds gold leaf to the sky and lets the wheat glow gold.
It makes a strong pair with Golden Woman with a Parasol, two outdoor scenes full of wind and moving cloud, and it also sits well beside Wild Horses at Sunset, whose amber dust matches the gold of the wheat. Stone, warm white, olive and soft blue-grey walls let the yellow sing, while a darker wall makes the gold in the sky stand out more. A wide natural wood frame suits the rural subject; a narrow black one makes it crisper. Add a cream mat for a gallery look. Side light from a window brings out the painted texture. The print file measures 7168 × 10752 px and stays sharp to about 60 × 90 cm. A Frame TV version with a gallery mat is included too.
