How large can I print it?

The file is around 9,000 px on the long edge. That prints crisply to about 75 cm on the long edge at gallery quality, and to 130–170 cm at the distance you look at a picture over furniture. Sizes, paper and framing, in detail →

Which paper or surface?

Gold on dark grounds wants a matte or satin fine-art paper (200–310 gsm), or aluminium for humid rooms; glossy photo paper turns the black into a mirror. The pale works also take satin and baryta papers.

Which licence do I need?

Personal (€9.99) covers your own home and gifts. Any business or space open to the public — a spa, clinic, hotel, office, restaurant — needs the commercial licence (€99.99, one venue, no renewal). The venue guide →

About this work

This is a night scene, and the light comes from one place: the large crescent moon at the top of the picture. From the calm, dark sea at the bottom centre, a fine golden staircase with railings climbs in a gentle S-curve until it meets the moon's lower tip. The eye tends to start at the water, follow the steps up and come back down along the moonlight. That light spreads into a broad shimmering golden path in the foreground. Above, a deep navy sky is scattered with stars, and a band of soft violet-pink cloud lies along the horizon. Gold and cream stand out sharply against the navy. Close to, the delicate railings and the sparkle on the water come forward. At a distance it reads as a single thread of gold tied to the moon. The mood is quiet, romantic and slightly mysterious.

People have always felt the pull of the Moon, and on the coast it is more than a feeling. Its gravity raises the tides, so many shores see two high and two low tides in a little over a day, and the biggest spring tides arrive around the new and full moon. Linking sea and sky with a stair turns that invisible pull into something you could climb, a step into the dream logic that surrealism explored from the 1920s onward. The staircase bends in an S rather than a closed coil, yet each half echoes the golden-ratio curve, the spiral tied to 1.618 and to the Fibonacci numbers 1, 2, 3, 5, 8 and 13.

It makes a gentle centrepiece above a bed, and suits a snug or a dining room lit by candles in the evening. Navy, ink blue, charcoal and dusky pink walls deepen its night sky, while warm white keeps it fresh. Choose a slim black or brushed gold frame; a navy wall with a gold frame looks especially rich. Low, warm light suits it far better than bright overhead bulbs. Over a double bed, 60 × 90 cm gives it real presence. It pairs naturally with The Cloud Staircase as its daytime partner, and with The Nautilus Lighthouse for another calm sea at dusk. The file prints sharply to roughly 91 cm on the long edge at 300 dpi.
