How large can I print it?
The file is around 9,000 px on the long edge. That prints crisply to about 75 cm on the long edge at gallery quality, and to 130–170 cm at the distance you look at a picture over furniture. Sizes, paper and framing, in detail →
Which paper or surface?
Gold on dark grounds wants a matte or satin fine-art paper (200–310 gsm), or aluminium for humid rooms; glossy photo paper turns the black into a mirror. The pale works also take satin and baryta papers.
Which licence do I need?
Personal (€9.99) covers your own home and gifts. Any business or space open to the public — a spa, clinic, hotel, office, restaurant — needs the commercial licence (€99.99, one venue, no renewal). The venue guide →
The tower stands in the centre and dominates the frame. Its white walls are trimmed with gold, and a gilded walkway with a balustrade spirals around it, carrying the eye upwards turn by turn to a slender spire. Many arched windows glow warm, as if the rooms inside are lit for the evening. Then the gaze drops to the lower right, where a large white nautilus shell curls out of the cloud, its spiral chambers clearly visible. The shell and the walkway repeat the same turning motion at two scales. Around them lies a sea of sunlit cloud, and the blue sky is streaked with peach and gold at sunset. Ivory and gold lead, softened by peach. Up close, the ornate details and window arches are crisp. From a distance it reads as one bright, winding tower. The mood is majestic, like a fairytale.
A living nautilus builds its shell as it goes. The animal occupies only the outermost chamber, and as it grows it moves forward and seals the space behind it with a thin wall. A narrow tube running through the older chambers lets it adjust gas and liquid, so it can rise and sink in the sea. The result is a coil that keeps its shape while getting larger, a logarithmic spiral often compared with the golden ratio of 1.618, although real shells usually measure somewhat differently. Placing that shell at the foot of a castle in the clouds is pure surrealism, the 1920s movement that made impossible scenes feel calm and natural.
A child's bedroom or playroom is an obvious home, but it also lifts a hallway or a living room that needs a touch of grandeur. Ivory, pale blue, blush and soft peach walls echo its sunset sky. A gilt frame suits its baroque detail, while a plain white frame with a generous mat feels lighter and more modern. Bright daylight shows off the glowing windows and the gold trim. Its height suits a tall, narrow wall or the space above a chest of drawers. Hang it with The Liquid Gold Nautilus to repeat the shell, or with The Spiral Library for another story told in spirals. The file prints sharply to roughly 91 cm on the long edge at 300 dpi.
