Moss and Mushrooms

Vintage Botanical Print

Edge to edge, a forest floor fills the sheet: soft mounds of green moss, more than twenty brown-capped mushrooms in little groups, young ferns, a few orange fungi and one large cream mushroom.

Its earthy palette feels at home in a reading nook, a dining room or a country-style bedroom, above a dresser, a chest or a fireplace. Ochre, moss, mushroom grey and warm cream walls suit it.

Moss and Mushrooms — Samsung Frame TV art, 3840 × 2160
How large can I print it?

The file is around 9,000 px on the long edge. That prints crisply to about 75 cm on the long edge at gallery quality, and to 130–170 cm at the distance you look at a picture over furniture. Sizes, paper and framing, in detail →

Which paper or surface?

Gold on dark grounds wants a matte or satin fine-art paper (200–310 gsm), or aluminium for humid rooms; glossy photo paper turns the black into a mirror. The pale works also take satin and baryta papers.

Which licence do I need?

Personal (€9.99) covers your own home and gifts. Any business or space open to the public — a spa, clinic, hotel, office, restaurant — needs the commercial licence (€99.99, one venue, no renewal). The venue guide →

About this work

There is no single centre here; the picture works like a tapestry, and the eye is free to wander. It might start with the large cream mushroom on the right, the brightest shape in the scene, then drift across the groups of brown caps with their cream gills and pale stems. Mounds of moss swell between them, while young curled fern tips and fronds frame the top and bottom. Small orange fungi add sparks of warm colour, and a tree trunk at the upper right hints at the wood beyond. The engraving is dense throughout, so every surface has texture, from the velvety moss to the fine lines under each cap. No gold is used; the mood comes from moss green, rust and cream against very dark brown. Up close it is full of discoveries, and from a distance it becomes a rich, earthy pattern.

Every mushroom in a scene like this is only the visible tip of a much larger organism. The main body of a fungus is the mycelium, a web of fine threads called hyphae that spreads through soil, leaf litter and dead wood, often unseen for years. When conditions are right, usually after rain in late summer and autumn, it sends up mushrooms, its fruiting bodies, to release spores. Some mycelia grow vast: a honey fungus in the Blue Mountains of Oregon covers almost ten square kilometres and is often cited as one of the largest organisms known. Beneath the moss, such hidden networks break down fallen leaves and wood and return their nutrients to the soil.

In a snug, a study or a hallway with wooden floors, it brings the calm of a walk in the woods indoors. Deep green, olive, terracotta and cream walls suit it, and a dark walnut, oak or black frame holds the dense detail without competing. Because the scene runs to every edge, a slim mat or none at all keeps the forest floor immersive. Warm lamplight deepens the browns and makes the large cream mushroom and the pale gills glow. Partner it with The Golden Mushrooms, which adds a touch of gold, or let Fern Forest in Gold continue the woodland theme. Printed from the 7168 × 10752 px file, the picture stays sharp at sizes up to about 60 × 90 cm. A Frame TV version, set on a gallery mat, is included.
