The Golden Mushrooms

Vintage Botanical Print in Gold

Wild forest mushrooms gather in a cluster, their caps in orange, rust and cream, standing among soft moss and small ferns. Gold highlights pick out the forms in the manner of an antique mycology plate, set on a deep chocolate-brown background.

How large can I print it?

The file is around 9,000 px on the long edge. That prints crisply to about 75 cm on the long edge at gallery quality, and to 130–170 cm at the distance you look at a picture over furniture. Sizes, paper and framing, in detail →

Which paper or surface?

Gold on dark grounds wants a matte or satin fine-art paper (200–310 gsm), or aluminium for humid rooms; glossy photo paper turns the black into a mirror. The pale works also take satin and baryta papers.

Which licence do I need?

Personal (€9.99) covers your own home and gifts. Any business or space open to the public — a spa, clinic, hotel, office, restaurant — needs the commercial licence (€99.99, one venue, no renewal). The venue guide →

About this work

A cluster of wild forest mushrooms rises from the ground, their caps in orange, rust and cream. They stand among soft moss and small ferns, like a corner of woodland floor brought indoors. Gold highlights pick out the caps and stems in the manner of an antique mycology plate, and the deep chocolate-brown background makes every warm colour stand out.

Mushrooms have their own place in the history of natural history illustration. Mycology plates of the late 18th and 19th centuries, such as James Sowerby's Coloured Figures of English Fungi or Mushrooms (1795–1815), recorded caps, gills and stems with patient accuracy, often grouping several specimens on one sheet. Fungi were long studied alongside plants, although they are now recognised as a kingdom of their own. The Golden Mushrooms borrows that careful, specimen-like arrangement and adds a little gold.

Its earthy palette suits a kitchen, a study, a cosy living room or a cabin-style bedroom, above a sideboard, a bench or a bookcase. It looks rich on cream, terracotta, olive, deep green or warm brown walls. The 7168 × 10752 px print file stays sharp to about 60 × 90 cm; a dark walnut or antique gold frame suits it. A Frame TV version with a gallery mat is included. Hang it beside The Golden Fern.
