The Golden Fern — Samsung Frame TV art, 3840 × 2160
How large can I print it?

The file is around 9,000 px on the long edge. That prints crisply to about 75 cm on the long edge at gallery quality, and to 130–170 cm at the distance you look at a picture over furniture. Sizes, paper and framing, in detail →

Which paper or surface?

Gold on dark grounds wants a matte or satin fine-art paper (200–310 gsm), or aluminium for humid rooms; glossy photo paper turns the black into a mirror. The pale works also take satin and baryta papers.

Which licence do I need?

Personal (€9.99) covers your own home and gifts. Any business or space open to the public — a spa, clinic, hotel, office, restaurant — needs the commercial licence (€99.99, one venue, no renewal). The venue guide →

About this work

One tall fern frond rises from the bottom edge of the picture and climbs almost the full height of the sheet. At the top it unfurls into a perfect golden spiral, the tightly curled tip known as a fiddlehead. The leaflets are finely engraved and edged in raised gold leaf, so the whole frond seems to glow against the deep forest-green background.

Ferns were the great obsession of Victorian Britain. From the 1840s onwards the so-called pteridomania, a name coined by Charles Kingsley in 1855, sent collectors into woods and hedgerows, filled parlours with glass cases of living ferns and put fronds on everything from pottery to garden benches. The fiddlehead, the young frond slowly uncoiling as it grows, was a favourite motif, and here it becomes the golden heart of the image.

The Golden Fern brings depth to a study, a hallway or a bedroom, and it looks rich above a sofa or a dark wood sideboard. It works on warm white, olive, deep green or charcoal walls. Printed from the 7168 × 10752 px file, it stays sharp to about 60 × 90 cm; a slim black or brass frame suits it well. A Frame TV version with a gallery mat is included. Pair it with Golden Ginkgo.
