Its quiet palette suits a bedroom, a bathroom or a reading corner, and it sits easily above a bed, a dresser or a sofa. Try it on sage, cream, warm white, soft grey or pale wood-panelled walls.

How large can I print it?

The file is around 9,000 px on the long edge. That prints crisply to about 75 cm on the long edge at gallery quality, and to 130–170 cm at the distance you look at a picture over furniture. Sizes, paper and framing, in detail →

Which paper or surface?

Gold on dark grounds wants a matte or satin fine-art paper (200–310 gsm), or aluminium for humid rooms; glossy photo paper turns the black into a mirror. The pale works also take satin and baryta papers.

Which licence do I need?

Personal (€9.99) covers your own home and gifts. Any business or space open to the public — a spa, clinic, hotel, office, restaurant — needs the commercial licence (€99.99, one venue, no renewal). The venue guide →

About this work

A slender ginkgo branch reaches across the picture, carrying its unmistakable fan-shaped leaves. The upper leaves are gilded in raised gold leaf and catch the light, while the lower ones stay a pale sage-green, as if the branch were turning from one season to the next. The background is a calm, muted sage-green that lets both tones breathe.

The ginkgo is often called a living fossil, a phrase Charles Darwin introduced in 1859. Ginkgo biloba is the only surviving species of a plant lineage whose fossil leaves go back to the age of the dinosaurs, and its fan-shaped leaves have changed remarkably little since. Each autumn they turn a clear golden yellow before falling, which makes the gilded leaves in this picture feel less like decoration and more like a portrait of the tree itself.

Golden Ginkgo brings a soft, restful note to a bedroom, a bathroom or a reading corner, above a bed, a dresser or a sofa. As sage green wall art it blends with sage, cream, warm white or soft grey walls. The 7168 × 10752 px print file stays sharp to about 60 × 90 cm; a light oak or slim gold frame suits it. A Frame TV version with a gallery mat is included. Pair it with The Golden Fern.
