The Maidenhair Fern

Vintage Botanical Print in Gold

Dozens of tiny gold fans seem to float on a dark green ground, each one a maidenhair leaflet held out on a hair-thin black stem that climbs from the lower right corner towards the upper left.

Its quiet green and gold suit a bedroom, a reading corner or a dining room, hung above a bed, a console table or a narrow chest. Sage, cream, forest green and charcoal walls all flatter it.

The Maidenhair Fern — Samsung Frame TV art, 3840 × 2160
How large can I print it?

The file is around 9,000 px on the long edge. That prints crisply to about 75 cm on the long edge at gallery quality, and to 130–170 cm at the distance you look at a picture over furniture. Sizes, paper and framing, in detail →

Which paper or surface?

Gold on dark grounds wants a matte or satin fine-art paper (200–310 gsm), or aluminium for humid rooms; glossy photo paper turns the black into a mirror. The pale works also take satin and baryta papers.

Which licence do I need?

Personal (€9.99) covers your own home and gifts. Any business or space open to the public — a spa, clinic, hotel, office, restaurant — needs the commercial licence (€99.99, one venue, no renewal). The venue guide →

About this work

The stem enters low on the right and wanders upwards in a long diagonal, forking again and again, so the eye travels with it from corner to corner. Along the way about forty leaflets gather in loose sprays, never crowded, with plenty of dark green left between them to breathe. Every fan is laid in gold leaf, and fine veins radiate from its base to its outer edge like the ribs of a tiny folding fan. Against the deep, slightly mottled ground the gold looks soft and warm rather than flashy, while the black stem reads as a fine ink line. Close to the wall you notice the veining and the faint texture of the background. From across the room the leaflets merge into a light, rising cloud, delicate and composed.

Maidenhair ferns belong to the genus Adiantum, a name taken from the Greek adiantos, meaning unwetted. The leaflets really do shed water: rain or spray gathers into beads and rolls off, leaving the surface dry. In the wild many species grow where moisture never lets up, on dripping rocks beside springs, waterfalls and shaded streams. The fine, dark stalks, thin as hair, are usually taken to explain the English name, and the European species Adiantum capillus-veneris is known as Venus's hair. Here the leaflets are gilded instead of green, yet the outline is unmistakable: small fans on wiry stems, exactly the shape a botanist would recognise.

In a hallway or a study it brings a calm touch of green and gold, and the airy layout keeps it light enough for a smaller room. Olive, warm white, deep teal and sage walls bring out the gilding; a thin brass or black frame with a wide cream mat lets the leaflets float. Soft side light from a window or a lamp makes the gold fans glint as you walk past. For a fern wall, hang it with The Golden Fiddleheads, or pair it with Golden Ginkgo, whose gilded fan-shaped leaves echo these small golden fans. Printed from the 7168 × 10752 px file, it stays sharp to about 60 × 90 cm. A Frame TV version with a gallery mat is also part of the download.
