How large can I print it?

The file is around 9,000 px on the long edge. That prints crisply to about 75 cm on the long edge at gallery quality, and to 130–170 cm at the distance you look at a picture over furniture. Sizes, paper and framing, in detail →

Which paper or surface?

Gold on dark grounds wants a matte or satin fine-art paper (200–310 gsm), or aluminium for humid rooms; glossy photo paper turns the black into a mirror. The pale works also take satin and baryta papers.

Which licence do I need?

Personal (€9.99) covers your own home and gifts. Any business or space open to the public — a spa, clinic, hotel, office, restaurant — needs the commercial licence (€99.99, one venue, no renewal). The venue guide →

About this work

The sprig grows from the lower right towards the upper left in one clean diagonal. Its leaves are long and pointed, painted in layered olive, sage and almost black greens, with pale silvery undersides showing where a leaf turns. Near the lower end of the stem hang three small, round green olives with soft highlights. A few leaves carry the faintest warm sheen, but this is the most natural, least gilded piece in the olive series. The background is warm cream paper with a visible fibrous texture and soft speckles, like an old herbarium sheet. There is plenty of empty space above and to the right, which keeps the study light and calm.

Botanical illustration reached a high point in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, when artists travelled with explorers and drew plants with scientific precision for books and herbaria. A single stem on plain paper, showing leaves, fruit and the way the plant grows, became a classic format that still looks elegant today. Olive branches were a favourite because they combine fine detail with a strong, simple silhouette. This picture is a modern version of such a study. Its restraint makes it a good bridge between the gilded works of the Japandi Gold collection and a more classic, Mediterranean kitchen or dining room.

Hang it in a kitchen, above a dining table or in a hallway, singly or as part of a botanical gallery wall. Cream, white, olive green and terracotta walls all suit it, as do natural wood and linen. A thin black or walnut frame gives it a classic herbarium feel; light oak makes it softer. Pair it with Olive Branch with Green Olives for a matching olive duo, or with The Golden Olive Branch if you want one green and one gilded piece. The file prints with crisp detail to roughly 91 cm on the long side at 300 dpi.
