The Moth and the Flame

Dark Academia Wall Art

Above a single lit candle in an ornate brass candlestick, a large moth spreads its wings across the top of a pure black sheet, dark engraved forewings framing pale gold hindwings.

Its stark black ground suits a dark bedroom, a dressing room or a study; over a desk or bedside table it looks striking against black, charcoal, plum or deep green.

The Moth and the Flame — Samsung Frame TV art, 3840 × 2160
How large can I print it?

The file is around 9,000 px on the long edge. That prints crisply to about 75 cm on the long edge at gallery quality, and to 130–170 cm at the distance you look at a picture over furniture. Sizes, paper and framing, in detail →

Which paper or surface?

Gold on dark grounds wants a matte or satin fine-art paper (200–310 gsm), or aluminium for humid rooms; glossy photo paper turns the black into a mirror. The pale works also take satin and baryta papers.

Which licence do I need?

Personal (€9.99) covers your own home and gifts. Any business or space open to the public — a spa, clinic, hotel, office, restaurant — needs the commercial licence (€99.99, one venue, no renewal). The venue guide →

About this work

The layout is almost symmetrical, and that is where its tension comes from. The moth occupies the top of the sheet, wings spread flat as if laid out in a collector's drawer, while the candle stands alone near the bottom centre, and between them stretches empty black. The eye travels up and down that gap, waiting for something to happen. The forewings are dark and densely engraved with fine pattern, and the hindwings open beneath them in pale gold, so the moth itself seems to hold a little of the flame's colour. Below, the brass candlestick is worked with engraved ornament and lifts the small, warm flame. Close up the line work rewards slow looking, like an old print; from across the room you see two gold shapes in a field of night.

Why moths circle a flame has puzzled people for centuries, and the phrase like a moth to a flame is far older than electric light. A favourite explanation was that night-flying insects steer by the moon and mistake a nearby lamp for it. A study published in 2024 in Nature Communications by Samuel Fabian and colleagues, who recorded insects in flight around lights, pointed elsewhere. Flying insects tend to keep their backs turned towards the brightest part of their surroundings, which is normally the sky. Near a small light source that habit makes them tilt towards it, trapping them in circling or stalling flight. Here the moth stays above the candle, caught at the moment before.

With The Golden Heart beside it, the dark grounds and engraved lines make a strong pair for a bedroom or hallway. The Raven and the Candle continues the candle theme in a richer, painted style. Black, charcoal, aubergine and deep forest walls all let the background disappear into the wall; on white, a slim black frame with a white mat turns it into a crisp graphic. Gold or black frames both suit it. Because so much of the sheet is black, it is best hung away from direct glare, under soft warm light. Printed from the 7168 × 10752 px file, it remains sharp to about 60 × 90 cm. Every purchase also comes with a Frame TV version with a gallery mat.
