This work is drawn for screens: the 4K TV pack holds 3840 × 2160 for the Samsung Frame and other 4K TVs, plus 2560 × 1440 and 1920 × 1080 for older sets, monitors and digital frames. The picture fills the screen edge to edge, so no mat is needed. All about 4K TV art →

The Spiral Muse — 4K TV art, 3840 × 2160
How large can I print it?

The print file is 7,680 × 4,320 px. That prints crisply to about 65 × 37 cm at gallery quality, and to about 130 × 73 cm at the distance you look at a picture over a sofa. Sizes, paper and framing, in detail →

Which paper or surface?

Gold on dark grounds wants a matte or satin fine-art paper (200–310 gsm), or aluminium for humid rooms; glossy photo paper turns the black into a mirror. The pale works also take satin and baryta papers.

Which licence do I need?

Personal (€9.99) covers your own home and gifts. Any business or space open to the public — a spa, clinic, hotel, office, restaurant — needs the commercial licence (€99.99, one venue, no renewal). The venue guide →

About this work

The picture is split into two moods. On the right, a woman with black curls and pale grey eyes looks out calmly. On the left, huge spirals made of gold and black stripes curl through a dark ground, which is scattered with gold and white dots like a night sky. The spirals almost seem to grow out of her hair, turning the portrait into pure graphic energy.

Black and gold have been a classic pairing for centuries. Japanese lacquerware, with gold dusted onto black, was admired in Vienna around 1900, and the city's designers loved the same sharp contrast in their furniture, posters and jewellery. A generation later Art Deco took black and gold into hotels, cinemas and ocean liners. The Spiral Muse draws on that heritage and on Klimt's love of the spiral, but it is an original picture with its own bold rhythm.

This is a piece for rooms that like contrast: charcoal, white, deep green or oxblood walls, black metal and brass, velvet and marble. Its horizontal format sits well above a sofa, a sideboard or a bar cabinet, and on a Samsung Frame or 4K TV the black background blends into the screen while the gold spirals stand out. For a purely abstract partner in the same palette, pair it with The Golden Spiral.
