About this work

Spirals lock into one another across the whole width of this abstract mosaic. They are built from small tiles in navy, slate blue and white, and the rhythm of the curls is interrupted here and there by patches of gold and round gold discs. There is no figure and no horizon, yet the movement reads like a night sea, wave curling into wave.

Mosaic is one of the oldest ways of making a picture that lasts. In the early Christian and Byzantine churches of Ravenna, tesserae of coloured glass and gold leaf turn whole walls into shimmering fields of light. Gustav Klimt saw them in 1903, in the middle of his golden period, and spirals, discs and patches of gold became part of his ornamental language. This picture borrows that vocabulary in a cooler, nocturnal key.

As horizontal wall art it suits a living room above a sofa, a bedroom above the headboard or a hallway above a console. Navy, charcoal or warm white walls bring out the gold.
