The Golden River

Klimt Mosaic Abstract in Gold

A river of gold and amber mosaic flows across a black ground, crowded with spiral discs, red and cream tiles and dots of white and gold. It is abstract, and warm from edge to edge.

Its long, flowing band suits panoramic spaces: above a sofa, a bed or a low media unit, or as a 4K TV or Samsung Frame picture in a living room.

The Golden River — 4K TV art, 3840 × 2160
How large can I print it?

The print file is 7,680 × 4,320 px. That prints crisply to about 65 × 37 cm at gallery quality, and to about 130 × 73 cm at the distance you look at a picture over a sofa. Sizes, paper and framing, in detail →

Which paper or surface?

Gold on dark grounds wants a matte or satin fine-art paper (200–310 gsm), or aluminium for humid rooms; glossy photo paper turns the black into a mirror. The pale works also take satin and baryta papers.

Which licence do I need?

Personal (€9.99) covers your own home and gifts. Any business or space open to the public — a spa, clinic, hotel, office, restaurant — needs the commercial licence (€99.99, one venue, no renewal). The venue guide →

About this work

Across a black ground runs a broad river of gold and amber mosaic. It is full of incident: spiral discs, red and cream tiles, and dots of white and gold that glitter along its course. There is no figure here, only movement and warmth, the band of colour flowing from one side of the picture to the other.

Gustav Klimt's most ambitious use of mosaic was the Stoclet Frieze, made between about 1905 and 1911 for the dining room of the Palais Stoclet in Brussels. Built from marble, enamel, gold leaf and semi-precious stones, it shows the Tree of Life with branches unfurling into spirals across a gold ground. The Golden River takes that language of discs, spirals and tesserae and lets it run free as pure abstraction.

As panoramic wall art it needs width: a long wall above a sofa, a bed or a sideboard, where the river can run. Black, deep green or warm grey walls make the gold glow, and on a 4K TV or Samsung Frame the dots sparkle like a real mosaic. For a second abstract in the same spirit, hang it with Emerald Night Spirals.
