On a 4K TV or Samsung Frame

This work is drawn for screens: the 4K TV pack holds 3840 × 2160 for the Samsung Frame and other 4K TVs, plus 2560 × 1440 and 1920 × 1080 for older sets, monitors and digital frames. The picture fills the screen edge to edge, so no mat is needed. All about 4K TV art →

The Golden Sleeper — 4K TV art, 3840 × 2160
How large can I print it?

The print file is 7,680 × 4,320 px. That prints crisply to about 65 × 37 cm at gallery quality, and to about 130 × 73 cm at the distance you look at a picture over a sofa. Sizes, paper and framing, in detail →

Which paper or surface?

Gold on dark grounds wants a matte or satin fine-art paper (200–310 gsm), or aluminium for humid rooms; glossy photo paper turns the black into a mirror. The pale works also take satin and baryta papers.

Which licence do I need?

Personal (€9.99) covers your own home and gifts. Any business or space open to the public — a spa, clinic, hotel, office, restaurant — needs the commercial licence (€99.99, one venue, no renewal). The venue guide →

How big, and how high, on my wall?

About this work

In the upper left corner a woman sleeps, her black hair framing a face with closed eyes and a peaceful expression. The rest of the picture is given over to pattern: a dense patchwork of gold squares, spirals and black circles that spreads out from her like a heavy, glittering blanket. The contrast between her stillness and the busy gold is what holds the eye.

Sleep and dreams were a favourite subject in Vienna around 1900. Sigmund Freud's The Interpretation of Dreams appeared there at the end of 1899, and Klimt painted many women with closed eyes, lost in sleep or reverie, their bodies wrapped in squares, circles and spirals of gold. The Golden Sleeper is an original picture after Klimt rather than a copy, built on that same contrast between a quiet face and a field of restless ornament.

Black and gold suit bedrooms especially well, above the bed with deep blue, charcoal, plum or warm white walls and soft textiles. The wide format also works above a sofa or a long sideboard, and on a Samsung Frame or 4K TV it turns the black screen into a calm, golden surface at the end of the day. For a pair of sleeping women, hang it with The Poppy Cheek.
