How large can I print it?

The print file is 7,680 × 4,320 px. That prints crisply to about 65 × 37 cm at gallery quality, and to about 130 × 73 cm at the distance you look at a picture over a sofa. Sizes, paper and framing, in detail →

Which paper or surface?

Gold on dark grounds wants a matte or satin fine-art paper (200–310 gsm), or aluminium for humid rooms; glossy photo paper turns the black into a mirror. The pale works also take satin and baryta papers.

Which licence do I need?

Personal (€9.99) covers your own home and gifts. Any business or space open to the public — a spa, clinic, hotel, office, restaurant — needs the commercial licence (€99.99, one venue, no renewal). The venue guide →

About this work

The flowers fill the picture from edge to edge, so the composition feels like kneeling beside a winter flower bed rather than studying a single specimen. Open blooms are spread across the surface, and closed buds rise between them, promising more to come. Their white is never flat: the painterly engraved detail adds soft shading to every flower, and the pale blue-grey sky behind keeps that white cool and fresh. Golden-yellow and green stamens give each bloom a warm centre, and those small points of colour lead the eye from flower to flower across the width. Green leaves anchor the lower half, and the snow along the bottom edge ties everything to the season. Seen from across the room it is bright and airy; closer in, the fine detail of the stamens becomes the real pleasure.

In German the Christmas rose, Helleborus niger, is called Schneerose, the snow rose, and the name fits. In the wild, in the Alps and neighbouring mountains, it often opens its flowers while snow still lies around it, and a covering of snow can even help, because it insulates plants from the harshest frost. Gardeners prize it for blooming when beds are otherwise bare. Flowers that open in winter can also matter to insects. On mild, sunny days in late winter, honeybees and early bumblebee queens may be out foraging, and hellebores are among the few garden plants with pollen and nectar to offer at that time. A clump in flower is a small, welcome sign that the year is turning.

Hung in a bedroom or kitchen, it lightens the darkest weeks from Advent to Candlemas, and because hellebores bloom on into early spring, it does not look out of place in February or March. White, pale grey and soft blue walls suit its palette, and a white, silver or pale oak frame keeps it airy. The print file is 7680 × 4320 px, about 65 cm wide at 300 dpi, comfortable above a bed or a long bench. The separate 4K TV pack holds 3840 × 2160 for the Samsung Frame or any 4K art-mode TV, plus 2560 × 1440 and 1920 × 1080. The Christmas Rose, the burgundy portrait version, and Winter Berries and Ivy belong close by.
