How large can I print it?

The file is around 9,000 px on the long edge. That prints crisply to about 75 cm on the long edge at gallery quality, and to 130–170 cm at the distance you look at a picture over furniture. Sizes, paper and framing, in detail →

Which paper or surface?

Gold on dark grounds wants a matte or satin fine-art paper (200–310 gsm), or aluminium for humid rooms; glossy photo paper turns the black into a mirror. The pale works also take satin and baryta papers.

Which licence do I need?

Personal (€9.99) covers your own home and gifts. Any business or space open to the public — a spa, clinic, hotel, office, restaurant — needs the commercial licence (€99.99, one venue, no renewal). The venue guide →

About this work

The flowers are arranged on a gentle diagonal: two large blooms at the upper left and centre-left face outward, while a smaller one at the right turns half away, as if glancing aside. That turn keeps the group lively. Three or four closed buds, two at the upper left and one lower left, add small cream accents, and the dark green, serrated leaves fill the lower half like a shadowed base. Slender brown-green stems lead down to the bottom edge. The strongest contrast is between the white flowers and the oxblood ground, which makes them look almost lit from within. There is no gold leaf here; the only gold is the warm yellow of the stamens. Fine engraved lines shade each broad white petal, visible up close, while from across the room the flowers read as soft, luminous shapes.

The Christmas rose is not a rose at all but Helleborus niger, a member of the buttercup family. It grows wild in the mountains of central and southern Europe, including the Alps, where it can flower from midwinter onwards, sometimes pushing its blooms up through the snow. What look like five white petals are in fact sepals, the outer parts that protect a flower bud. Sepals are tougher than petals, which is why the blooms last for weeks, often fading slowly to pink or green instead of dropping. The species name niger, meaning black, refers to the dark roots rather than the flowers, a curious name for such a pale bloom.

Through Advent and the darkest weeks of the year it brings fresh white flowers to a dining room or bedroom, and since hellebores go on blooming into early spring, it never looks out of season. Burgundy, cream, dove grey and dusty pink walls suit it, and a gold or dark wood frame with a cream mat keeps the antique feel. Gentle daylight shows the engraved shading best; in the evening, a warm lamp deepens the red ground. Hang it with Christmas Rose Meadow for a wider winter display, or beside The Red Amaryllis for a festive pair in red and white. Printed from the 7168 × 10752 px file, it stays sharp to about 60 × 90 cm. A Frame TV version with a gallery mat is included.
