The Architect's Nautilus — 4K TV art, 3840 × 2160
How large can I print it?

The print file is 7,680 × 4,320 px. That prints crisply to about 65 × 37 cm at gallery quality, and to about 130 × 73 cm at the distance you look at a picture over a sofa. Sizes, paper and framing, in detail →

Which paper or surface?

Gold on dark grounds wants a matte or satin fine-art paper (200–310 gsm), or aluminium for humid rooms; glossy photo paper turns the black into a mirror. The pale works also take satin and baryta papers.

Which licence do I need?

Personal (€9.99) covers your own home and gifts. Any business or space open to the public — a spa, clinic, hotel, office, restaurant — needs the commercial licence (€99.99, one venue, no renewal). The venue guide →

About this work

The Architect's Nautilus shows a nautilus cut open, its chambers glowing in amber, orange and teal, set in a gold ring on the right. On the left, a pale architect's grid drawing spreads out, and everything sits on old cream paper, like a page from a designer's notebook.

A cut nautilus is one of nature's clearest diagrams. The animal lives only in the outermost chamber; as it grows, it seals off the older ones behind thin walls called septa, and a tube called the siphuncle adjusts the gas and fluid inside them to control buoyancy. Architects have long been drawn to such proportion: in the 1940s Le Corbusier based his Modulor system on the golden ratio and the human body. The shell is not a perfect golden spiral, but its steady growth is a model of order.

This nautilus shell art brings warmth to a study, office, library corner or living room, and sits beautifully with teal, cream, ochre or deep brown walls. The 16:9 format fits above a desk, sofa or sideboard, and on a 4K TV or Samsung Frame the amber chambers glow. For a pair of spiral studies, hang it with The Blue Nautilus Blueprint.
