About this work

Magnolia Branch on Black shows a long branch of white magnolia flowers and buds reaching across the whole width of the picture. Each petal is edged in a fine line of gold, and the deep matte black background makes the white blooms stand out with real drama, from the open flowers to the smallest closed bud.

Antique botanical plates of the 18th and 19th centuries usually set a single branch on pale paper, drawn and hand-coloured with great care so that every flower and bud could be studied. This picture keeps that clear, specimen-like way of presenting a branch, but turns the page dark. On black, the magnolia loses nothing of its botanical precision and gains the elegance of an evening room.
