Frosted Winter Forest Floor

Botanical TV Art

Silvery ferns and pine boughs cover the dark midnight-navy ground almost completely, all of them touched with frost, while a few pine cones in warm silver-beige break through the cold blue.

How large can I print it?

The print file is 7,680 × 4,320 px. That prints crisply to about 65 × 37 cm at gallery quality, and to about 130 × 73 cm at the distance you look at a picture over a sofa. Sizes, paper and framing, in detail →

Which paper or surface?

Gold on dark grounds wants a matte or satin fine-art paper (200–310 gsm), or aluminium for humid rooms; glossy photo paper turns the black into a mirror. The pale works also take satin and baryta papers.

Which licence do I need?

Personal (€9.99) covers your own home and gifts. Any business or space open to the public — a spa, clinic, hotel, office, restaurant — needs the commercial licence (€99.99, one venue, no renewal). The venue guide →

About this work

There is no clear centre here: fronds and needles overlap from edge to edge, so the eye drifts across the surface the way it would across real undergrowth on a frozen morning. Only the pine cones give it places to rest. One sits centre-left, a small group of two or three gathers on the right, and another is cut off by the left edge, as if the scene carried on beyond the frame. Their warm beige is the only warmth in a nearly monochrome palette of blue-grey and pale silver, which makes them glow quietly. The navy ground shows only in small gaps, deepening the shadows between the leaves. Up close, the frost reads as fine pale detail along every frond; from further away the whole picture turns into a soft, shimmering winter texture.

Frost like this forms on still, clear nights. Without cloud cover, plants and the ground lose heat to the open sky and can cool below freezing even while the air a metre or two above stays just above zero. Moisture in the air then settles on those chilled surfaces as ice crystals without first forming dew, a change of state scientists call deposition. The crystals grow outwards from edges and tips, which is why fern leaflets and pine needles end up outlined in white. This is hoarfrost; the old word hoar meant grey or white with age, as in hoary. A breeze or a layer of cloud usually stops it forming, so a heavily frosted forest floor is the sign of a calm, clear and very cold night.

In a bedroom or study its cool palette feels restful, and it sits well on grey, navy, white or pale blue walls. Through December and January it gives a quiet winter mood without anything overtly festive, so it can stay up long after the decorations are packed away. A silver, pewter or thin black frame suits the frosty tones. The print file is 7680 × 4320 px, about 65 cm wide at 300 dpi, a good size above a bed or a long sofa. The separate 4K TV pack holds 3840 × 2160 for the Samsung Frame or any 4K art-mode TV, plus 2560 × 1440 and 1920 × 1080. Winter Fern and Frost and Snowy Pine Cones, both in portrait, make natural companions on a nearby wall.
