Snowy Pine Cones

Christmas Botanical Print in Gold

Snowflakes drift across a deep forest-green ground, where two pine cones hang among dark needles, each wearing a thick cap of white snow above brown, gold-tipped scales.

Cosy and festive, it belongs in a living room, hallway or children's room at Christmas, above a mantelpiece, sofa or bench, and looks best on white, cream, sage or deep green walls.

Snowy Pine Cones — Samsung Frame TV art, 3840 × 2160
How large can I print it?

The file is around 9,000 px on the long edge. That prints crisply to about 75 cm on the long edge at gallery quality, and to 130–170 cm at the distance you look at a picture over furniture. Sizes, paper and framing, in detail →

Which paper or surface?

Gold on dark grounds wants a matte or satin fine-art paper (200–310 gsm), or aluminium for humid rooms; glossy photo paper turns the black into a mirror. The pale works also take satin and baryta papers.

Which licence do I need?

Personal (€9.99) covers your own home and gifts. Any business or space open to the public — a spa, clinic, hotel, office, restaurant — needs the commercial licence (€99.99, one venue, no renewal). The venue guide →

About this work

Branches come in diagonally from the right and lower right, so the picture has a gentle slant, as if a bough had been caught in the middle of a snowfall. Opposite them, a single branch at the upper left carries its own small cap of snow and balances the composition. The two cones hang in the middle, one centre-left and one lower right, and draw the eye first: their white caps are the brightest shapes on the sheet, while the brown scales below are edged in gold. Small white snowflakes are scattered across the whole picture, softening the dark green and giving it movement. Fine engraved line work describes every needle and scale. Close up, the gold edges catch the light beneath the snow; from a distance, the scene settles into a quiet, wintry hush.

A pine cone is a small weather instrument. Its woody scales are built from layers of tissue that react differently to moisture, so in dry air the scales bend outward and the cone opens, and in damp weather they swell and close again. Opening on dry days lets the winged seeds fall when the wind can carry them furthest, while closing in the wet keeps them protected. In many pines a cone takes around two years to ripen on the tree, and some stay on the branch long after their seeds have gone. In a snowy winter like the one pictured here, the scales would mostly stay shut, guarding whatever seeds remain inside until a dry, bright day.

From Advent to Twelfth Night it brings a snowy view indoors, and through January and February it still feels right as winter wall art. Hang it in a living room above the sofa, in an entrance hall beside a coat bench, or in a bedroom where the dark green feels calm. Cream, white, sage and pine-green walls suit it, and a natural oak or slim gold frame adds warmth. The Golden Pine Cone makes a fine companion with its warmer black ground, and Winter Fern and Frost adds a cool, crystalline note nearby. Printed from the 7168 × 10752 px file, it stays sharp to about 60 × 90 cm. A Frame TV version with a gallery mat is included.
