How large can I print it?

The file is around 9,000 px on the long edge. That prints crisply to about 75 cm on the long edge at gallery quality, and to 130–170 cm at the distance you look at a picture over furniture. Sizes, paper and framing, in detail →

Which paper or surface?

Gold on dark grounds wants a matte or satin fine-art paper (200–310 gsm), or aluminium for humid rooms; glossy photo paper turns the black into a mirror. The pale works also take satin and baryta papers.

Which licence do I need?

Personal (€9.99) covers your own home and gifts. Any business or space open to the public — a spa, clinic, hotel, office, restaurant — needs the commercial licence (€99.99, one venue, no renewal). The venue guide →

About this work

Here the whole tree of life becomes a circle. Its trunk, branches and knotted roots are woven into a perfect ring of golden knotwork, each line passing over and under the next until crown and roots join. The design is worked in raised gold leaf on deep black, so the gold seems to float.

Interlaced knotwork like this belongs above all to the Celtic tradition. In Irish the tree of life is the crann bethadh, and in Celtic belief certain great trees were honoured as links between the earth below and the sky above; later Celtic-style designs often draw the tree with branches and roots looping into one unbroken circle. This picture is an original design in that spirit.

As black and gold wall art it gives a living room real presence above a sofa or a sideboard, and it suits a study or a bedroom just as well. Charcoal, black, white, grey or deep green walls all frame it well. A slim black or gold frame, with or without a mount, keeps the portrait print crisp. The download contains a 7168 × 10752 px print file, sharp to about 60 × 90 cm, and a Frame TV version with a gallery mat. For contrast, hang it beside The White and Gold Tree of Life.
