This work is drawn for screens: the 4K TV pack holds 3840 × 2160 for the Samsung Frame and other 4K TVs, plus 2560 × 1440 and 1920 × 1080 for older sets, monitors and digital frames. The picture fills the screen edge to edge, so no mat is needed. All about 4K TV art →

How large can I print it?

The print file is 7,680 × 4,320 px. That prints crisply to about 65 × 37 cm at gallery quality, and to about 130 × 73 cm at the distance you look at a picture over a sofa. Sizes, paper and framing, in detail →

Which paper or surface?

Gold on dark grounds wants a matte or satin fine-art paper (200–310 gsm), or aluminium for humid rooms; glossy photo paper turns the black into a mirror. The pale works also take satin and baryta papers.

Which licence do I need?

Personal (€9.99) covers your own home and gifts. Any business or space open to the public — a spa, clinic, hotel, office, restaurant — needs the commercial licence (€99.99, one venue, no renewal). The venue guide →

About this work

Seen close up, a nautilus shell turns slowly towards its centre. Its chambers are rendered in slate blue, pale grey and ivory, each one curving into the next as the spiral tightens. The surfaces look soft and sculptural, almost like carved stone, and the whole palette stays cool and quiet.

The chambered nautilus is a living relative of the octopus and squid, found in the deep waters of the Indo-Pacific. As it grows it builds a new, larger chamber and seals off the old one, regulating its buoyancy through a thin tube called the siphuncle. The result is a logarithmic spiral. It is often said to follow the golden ratio, but measurements show it does not; its beauty needs no myth. In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, polished nautilus shells were prized treasures in European cabinets of curiosities.

This nautilus shell art suits calm rooms: a bedroom above the bed, a bathroom, or a living room in grey, sage or soft white. It also works on a 4K TV or Samsung Frame, where the slate blues stay gentle. For a white-on-white companion, pair it with The Paper Nautilus.
