A great gold crescent curves behind the head of a resting woman with deep blue hair, and beyond it a dark circle of night sky glitters with small gold stars.

Navy and gold give a bedroom real calm; hang it above the bed or a dark wooden dresser, against midnight blue, charcoal, inky green or warm cream walls.

How large can I print it?
The file is around 9,000 px on the long edge. That prints crisply to about 75 cm on the long edge at gallery quality, and to 130–170 cm at the distance you look at a picture over furniture. Sizes, paper and framing, in detail →
Which paper or surface?
Gold on dark grounds wants a matte or satin fine-art paper (200–310 gsm), or aluminium for humid rooms; glossy photo paper turns the black into a mirror. The pale works also take satin and baryta papers.
Which licence do I need?
Personal (€9.99) covers your own home and gifts. Any business or space open to the public — a spa, clinic, hotel, office, restaurant — needs the commercial licence (€99.99, one venue, no renewal). The venue guide →
Circles inside circles organise this picture. The face, tilted upward and at rest, sits against the gold crescent moon, whose engraved ornament catches light like worked metal. Behind the crescent lies a dark disc of night sky full of tiny gold stars, and around that runs an outer border of round panels, each holding a large gold star. The eye moves outward ring by ring and then back to the pale face, the lightest area of the whole image. Her deep blue hair blends into the sky so that hair and night seem made of the same stuff. The navy robe below is patterned with gold swirls that repeat the curve of the moon. Close up, the engraving on the crescent and the swirling robe reward attention; from a distance the work becomes a glowing medallion of blue and gold.
A circle behind the head is one of the most recognisable devices in Mucha's work. In poster after poster he placed a disc, ring or decorated halo behind his women, which separates the face from the background and lends an ordinary figure something of the presence of a saint in a church window. He gathered motifs of this kind in Documents décoratifs, a pattern book published in 1902 that showed artists and craftsmen how ornaments, borders and figures could be built in his manner. The Moon Muse uses the halo in its most literal form: a crescent moon and a ring of stars take the place of the usual decorated disc.
Opposite Morning in Gold, it closes the day that picture opens. The Astronomer's Desk, with its dark blue night and gold-lined globe, is a fine companion for a study or a hallway nearby. Deep walls make the gold shine most: navy, slate, aubergine or a dark teal. On pale walls choose a wider mat so the dark circle does not feel heavy. Black or antique gold frames both suit it, and a thin bronze moulding is a quieter option. Warm, low lamplight in the evening brings the gold stars forward beautifully, while cold overhead light flattens them. Thanks to the 7168 × 10752 px file, it prints crisply up to about 60 × 90 cm. A Frame TV version with a gallery mat is included too.
