The Golden Iris — Samsung Frame TV art, 3840 × 2160
How large can I print it?

The file is around 9,000 px on the long edge. That prints crisply to about 75 cm on the long edge at gallery quality, and to 130–170 cm at the distance you look at a picture over furniture. Sizes, paper and framing, in detail →

Which paper or surface?

Gold on dark grounds wants a matte or satin fine-art paper (200–310 gsm), or aluminium for humid rooms; glossy photo paper turns the black into a mirror. The pale works also take satin and baryta papers.

Which licence do I need?

Personal (€9.99) covers your own home and gifts. Any business or space open to the public — a spa, clinic, hotel, office, restaurant — needs the commercial licence (€99.99, one venue, no renewal). The venue guide →

About this work

A tall bearded iris stands at the centre of the sheet, its petals shading from violet-blue to deep purple. At the throat of the flower, golden-bronze veining catches the eye like a small flame. Beside it rises a single closed bud, and long sword-shaped leaves frame the stem, all drawn in the manner of a vintage botanical plate on soft ivory.

Irises have long been a favourite of botanical artists. Pierre-Joseph Redouté, best known for his roses, devoted his great work Les Liliacées (1802–1816) to lilies and their relatives, and irises appear among its plates, painted with luminous colour and exact detail. The flower's very name comes from Iris, the Greek messenger of the gods and personification of the rainbow, a fitting name for petals that move from blue through violet to purple.

The Golden Iris has a tall, slender presence that suits a hallway, a bedroom wall beside the bed or a narrow space next to a window. It looks lovely on ivory, lavender, grey-blue, sage or soft white walls. Print it from the 7168 × 10752 px file, sharp to about 60 × 90 cm, and frame it in pale wood or antique gold. A Frame TV version with a gallery mat is included. It makes a graceful pair with The Golden Peony.
