How large can I print it?

The file is around 9,000 px on the long edge. That prints crisply to about 75 cm on the long edge at gallery quality, and to 130–170 cm at the distance you look at a picture over furniture. Sizes, paper and framing, in detail →

Which paper or surface?

Gold on dark grounds wants a matte or satin fine-art paper (200–310 gsm), or aluminium for humid rooms; glossy photo paper turns the black into a mirror. The pale works also take satin and baryta papers.

Which licence do I need?

Personal (€9.99) covers your own home and gifts. Any business or space open to the public — a spa, clinic, hotel, office, restaurant — needs the commercial licence (€99.99, one venue, no renewal). The venue guide →

About this work

A radiant sun of raised gold leaf rests on the tip of a tall triangle. The triangle is made of thin rainbow bands, stacked from base to point, and it all sits on a deep navy ground. Symmetrical and still, it draws the eye up to the gold.

The source is Hilma af Klint's Altarpiece of 1915, one of three large Altarpieces that close her cycle The Paintings for the Temple. The Swedish painter made abstract work before abstraction had a name, and she asked that it stay out of public view for twenty years after her death in 1944. In her Altarpiece No. 1 a stepped rainbow triangle rises to a golden circle. This version is a reimagining in gold, not a copy: the circle becomes raised gold leaf and the ground a deep navy.

It is a strong focal point for a bedroom, a yoga room or a dark hallway. Navy, midnight or charcoal walls let the rainbow bands glow, and a soft white wall makes the triangle crisper. It forms the set Pioneers of Abstraction in Gold with Rosettes in Gold and Composition in Red, Blue & Gold, two works after af Klint and one after Piet Mondrian. At about 9,000 px on the long edge it prints sharply to roughly 76 cm at 300 dpi.
