How large can I print it?

The file is around 9,000 px on the long edge. That prints crisply to about 75 cm on the long edge at gallery quality, and to 130–170 cm at the distance you look at a picture over furniture. Sizes, paper and framing, in detail →

Which paper or surface?

Gold on dark grounds wants a matte or satin fine-art paper (200–310 gsm), or aluminium for humid rooms; glossy photo paper turns the black into a mirror. The pale works also take satin and baryta papers.

Which licence do I need?

Personal (€9.99) covers your own home and gifts. Any business or space open to the public — a spa, clinic, hotel, office, restaurant — needs the commercial licence (€99.99, one venue, no renewal). The venue guide →

About this work

Thick black lines divide an off-white ground into rectangles. One large square is red, a small rectangle is blue, and where Mondrian placed yellow there is now raised gold leaf. Nothing else is added: only lines, three colours and a lot of white. The result is clean, balanced and modern, with the gold giving the grid a little warmth.

Piet Mondrian painted Composition with Red, Blue and Yellow in 1930, when the approach he called Neo-Plasticism was fully formed. With Theo van Doesburg and others he had founded the De Stijl movement in 1917, which looked for a universal visual language. Mondrian reduced painting to horizontal and vertical lines, the three primary colours and the non-colours black, white and grey. This work is a reimagining in gold, not a copy: the structure stays close to his 1930 composition, while the yellow becomes gold leaf.

It looks clean and contemporary in a living room, a kitchen, an office or above a white desk. White and pale grey walls keep the grid crisp, and a natural wood floor softens it. Pair it with Rosettes in Gold and The Golden Altarpiece, the Hilma af Klint works that complete the Pioneers of Abstraction in Gold set. The file prints sharply to roughly 76 cm on the long edge at 300 dpi.
