How large can I print it?

The file is around 9,000 px on the long edge. That prints crisply to about 75 cm on the long edge at gallery quality, and to 130–170 cm at the distance you look at a picture over furniture. Sizes, paper and framing, in detail →

Which paper or surface?

Gold on dark grounds wants a matte or satin fine-art paper (200–310 gsm), or aluminium for humid rooms; glossy photo paper turns the black into a mirror. The pale works also take satin and baryta papers.

Which licence do I need?

Personal (€9.99) covers your own home and gifts. Any business or space open to the public — a spa, clinic, hotel, office, restaurant — needs the commercial licence (€99.99, one venue, no renewal). The venue guide →

About this work

Wrapped in a pale sage hooded cloak, a young woman holds a small robin close to warm it. Behind her rises an ornate golden halo, and snow falls through the branches. The palette is cream, sage and frost blue, with gold leaf. It is the gentlest picture of the season.

The work follows Alphonse Mucha's Winter, one of The Seasons, a set of decorative panels he made in Paris in 1896. In his version a woman huddles in a cloak beside a snowy tree, warming a bird in her hands. The Winter Muse is a reimagining in gold, not a copy. The robin is a natural Christmas guest. In Victorian Britain, postmen wore red coats and were nicknamed robins, and the bird became a favourite on the Christmas cards they delivered.

It makes a Christmas gift that suits any room, from a bedroom to a reading corner, and it stays beautiful long after the holidays. Cream, sage, warm white and soft grey walls suit it best. As part of the set The Winter Muse, it hangs well with The Robin Muse and The Snowflake Reindeer. The file prints sharply to roughly 76 cm on the long edge at 300 dpi.
