The Breathing Sphere

Op Art in Gold

A perfectly flat checkerboard of raised gold leaf and black swells outwards in the middle, as if a sphere were breathing under the surface — pure op art, made only of squares.

How large can I print it?

The file is around 9,000 px on the long edge. That prints crisply to about 75 cm on the long edge at gallery quality, and to 130–170 cm at the distance you look at a picture over furniture. Sizes, paper and framing, in detail →

Which paper or surface?

Gold on dark grounds wants a matte or satin fine-art paper (200–310 gsm), or aluminium for humid rooms; glossy photo paper turns the black into a mirror. The pale works also take satin and baryta papers.

Which licence do I need?

Personal (€9.99) covers your own home and gifts. Any business or space open to the public — a spa, clinic, hotel, office, restaurant — needs the commercial licence (€99.99, one venue, no renewal). The venue guide →

About this work

A checkerboard of raised gold leaf and black squares lies perfectly flat, yet in the middle it seems to swell outwards, as if a sphere were breathing under the surface. No curve is drawn and no shading is added: the whole effect is made only of squares. It is graphic and precise, and it feels alive.

This is op art, short for optical art, the movement that grew in the 1960s around painters such as Victor Vasarely and Bridget Riley. They used simple geometric units, such as lines, squares and circles, to make the eye see movement, depth and swelling where none exists. Vasarely's Vega works, with their bulging grids, are close ancestors of this picture. The Breathing Sphere is a reimagining of that idea in gold, not a copy, and the raised gold leaf adds a play of light to the illusion.

It is striking above a desk, in a modern dining room or as the centre of a black-and-gold gallery wall. White, black and charcoal walls keep the contrast sharp. It forms the set Op Art in Gold with The Golden Vortex and The Impossible Stairs, three optical illusions in gold leaf and black. With around 9,000 px on the long edge, it prints sharply to about 76 cm at 300 dpi.
