Hummingbirds at Dusk shows two hummingbirds meeting in mid-air, their wings spread wide. Their backs are teal and their breasts glow amber-orange against a deep teal sky. From the lower left corner, a branch of orange blossoms rises towards them, as if the two birds were about to feed.

Hummingbirds live only in the Americas, from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego, and there are more than 300 species. They are the only birds that can hover for long periods and fly backwards, and the wings of smaller species beat dozens of times a second. Many of the flowers they visit are tubular and red or orange; bees see red poorly, which helps such flowers attract birds rather than insects. Much of a hummingbird's shimmer comes from the structure of its feathers, so the colours flash and change as the bird turns.
