Harmony in Red & Gold

Matisse Reimagined in Gold

Matisse’s Harmony in Red of 1908, reimagined without the figure: a deep red wall and tablecloth covered with arabesques of flowers in raised gold leaf, a table with fruit and a glass decanter, and a window onto green trees and blue sky.

How large can I print it?

The file is around 9,000 px on the long edge. That prints crisply to about 75 cm on the long edge at gallery quality, and to 130–170 cm at the distance you look at a picture over furniture. Sizes, paper and framing, in detail →

Which paper or surface?

Gold on dark grounds wants a matte or satin fine-art paper (200–310 gsm), or aluminium for humid rooms; glossy photo paper turns the black into a mirror. The pale works also take satin and baryta papers.

Which licence do I need?

Personal (€9.99) covers your own home and gifts. Any business or space open to the public — a spa, clinic, hotel, office, restaurant — needs the commercial licence (€99.99, one venue, no renewal). The venue guide →

About this work

One deep red fills almost the whole picture, covering both the wall and the tablecloth. Across it run arabesques of flowers in raised gold leaf. On the table stand fruit and a glass decanter, and a window opens onto green trees and blue sky. The figure of the original has been left out, so the room itself becomes the subject.

Henri Matisse painted Harmony in Red in 1908 for the Russian collector Sergei Shchukin. It began as a harmony in blue-green, but Matisse repainted the whole surface red before it left his studio, letting the pattern of the wall flow straight into the tablecloth until the space looked flat and decorative. The painting is now in the Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg. Harmony in Red & Gold is a reimagining in gold, not a copy: the red, the arabesques and the window remain, while the maid at the table is omitted.

Warm, rich and decorative, it is wonderful in a dining room, a kitchen or a living room with dark wood. Cream, deep green or warm grey walls give the red space to glow, and brass or copper accents echo the gold. In the Matisse Interiors in Gold set it sits beside Goldfish in Gold and The Open Window, Collioure. The file prints sharply to about 76 cm on the long edge at 300 dpi.
