Matisse Reimagined in Gold

Matisse’s Goldfish of 1912, reimagined: bright orange goldfish in a round glass bowl on a little blue-and-white table, surrounded by lush leaves and pink flowers, with touches of raised gold leaf on the bowl’s stand.

How large can I print it?

The file is around 9,000 px on the long edge. That prints crisply to about 75 cm on the long edge at gallery quality, and to 130–170 cm at the distance you look at a picture over furniture. Sizes, paper and framing, in detail →

Which paper or surface?

Gold on dark grounds wants a matte or satin fine-art paper (200–310 gsm), or aluminium for humid rooms; glossy photo paper turns the black into a mirror. The pale works also take satin and baryta papers.

Which licence do I need?

Personal (€9.99) covers your own home and gifts. Any business or space open to the public — a spa, clinic, hotel, office, restaurant — needs the commercial licence (€99.99, one venue, no renewal). The venue guide →

About this work

Bright orange goldfish circle in a round glass bowl that stands on a little blue-and-white table. Lush leaves and pink flowers surround it, and touches of raised gold leaf pick out the bowl’s stand. The picture is joyful and full of colour, yet the fish themselves seem perfectly calm.

Henri Matisse painted Goldfish in 1912, the year of his first stay in Morocco, where he had noticed people sitting for hours gazing into goldfish bowls. For him the fish suggested a slower, more contemplative way of living, and they appear in several of his paintings from those years. The original, with its tilted tabletop and vivid, unmixed colours, is now in the Pushkin Museum in Moscow. Goldfish in Gold is a reimagining, not a copy: Matisse’s composition with small, deliberate accents of gold leaf.

It brings cheer to a kitchen, a living room or a child’s room. White, soft green or pale blue walls let the orange glow, and rattan or painted wood suits its relaxed mood. As part of Matisse Interiors in Gold, hang it with The Open Window, Collioure and Harmony in Red & Gold for three rooms of fauvist colour. The file prints sharply to about 76 cm on the long edge at 300 dpi.
