How large can I print it?

The file is around 9,000 px on the long edge. That prints crisply to about 75 cm on the long edge at gallery quality, and to 130–170 cm at the distance you look at a picture over furniture. Sizes, paper and framing, in detail →

Which paper or surface?

Gold on dark grounds wants a matte or satin fine-art paper (200–310 gsm), or aluminium for humid rooms; glossy photo paper turns the black into a mirror. The pale works also take satin and baryta papers.

Which licence do I need?

Personal (€9.99) covers your own home and gifts. Any business or space open to the public — a spa, clinic, hotel, office, restaurant — needs the commercial licence (€99.99, one venue, no renewal). The venue guide →

About this work

One fine, continuous gold line draws a woman with short hair and closed eyes. She holds a small bird close to her heart. The line runs on warm cream, over soft blush pink and dusty blue shapes that look like paper cut-outs. It is a picture about care, and about freedom.

Henri Matisse drew with great economy. Many of his portraits and figures are made from a single contour, with no shading at all. In his last years, when illness made work at the easel difficult, he cut shapes from paper painted with gouache, and called it drawing with scissors. His book Jazz, published in 1947, grew from that work. The Woman with a Bird combines the two approaches. It is a reimagining in gold, not a copy of any Matisse.

Gentle and calm, it fits a bedroom, a dressing area or a reading corner. Pastel and neutral rooms suit it best: blush, powder blue, cream or warm white. It is one of the set Matisse Lines in Gold; hang it with The Golden Bouquet and The Lovers for three one-line drawings side by side. The file prints sharply to roughly 76 cm on the long edge at 300 dpi.
